The Weeknd, otherwise known as Abel, recently released his highly anticipated album Starboy, which dropped on Nov. 25 of 2016.

Expectations were high for The Weeknd for his seventh album release. “Abel better be delivering his usual bops” said junior Sofia St.Jean.

Unlike his last album, Beauty Behind the Madness, which has an intense pop vibe, Starboy has fallen back into “old Abel” which is focused on more R&B. His first five albums, from 2011 to 2013, were considered R&B treasures and underground music as Abel was not recognized for his talent by the mainstream public until around 2015.

The music on Starboy includes some songs with featured artists like Lana Del Rey and Future. Starboy hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as fans like Hebah Shahzeb were not disappointed by his new music.

“‘All I Know’ with Future is everything! and ‘Die For You’ is a bop. I love Abel,” said junior Hebah Shahzeb. “There isn’t one song on the album I don’t like.”

Yet, not everyone enjoys the new Abel. “I don’t really listen to The Weeknd. Ever since like he started to get more famous I kind of just stopped listening to him,” explained senior Zephina Funes. She is referring to The Weeknd’s very obvious change in pace of music after he was recognized for his voice. The music change also came from the realization that the public and radio stations like Hot 99.5 only play music that is considered pop or hip hop. Abel switched up his sound on his last album in 2015, but came back to his R&B roots again in 2016.

‘True Colors’ on the Starboy album is one of the slower songs with a relaxed beat and sensual lyrics. He hits those high notes right before and in the chorus of the song leaving fans “shook”.

Critics rate the new album low comparing The Weeknd to old time-y R&B, saying he doesn’t compare. His fans continue to argue that his music is real time R&B and they continue to support Abel no matter what he releases.
