During their 3-0 victory Tuesday against the Paint Branch Panthers, senior captain Katie Dailey made a play that symbolized the 2018 regular season for the CHS varsity Girls Volleyball team.

With the final set against Paint Branch on the line, Dailey, a setter and right side hitter sprinted full speed across the court to save the ball. The audience went wild as she reached the ball and got it over the net.

“It is not nerve-wracking to chase the ball, but exciting especially if I can get the ball back into play,” Dailey said.

The varsity volleyball team has worked hard this season finishing with an 11-8-1  record according to countysportszone.com. They have improved their skills and teamwork with every game with the help of coach Terry Smallwood.

Dailey and fellow senior captain Brianna Loewke have helped lead their team to victory using cohesive strategies. Much of their success has come from focusing on varied defenses which help the team adjust to any opponent.

“It is very intense, especially when the team on the other side is challenging you; it’s almost like I go into my own world. Nothing else matters. My mind is strictly on the game,” Loewke said.

Smallwood has trained the girls to be a powerhouse team. With his vast knowledge, he coaches the team to play smart. Before his coaching career, Smallwood worked at the Army Intelligence Corps with a Top-Secret Background Investigation. He has been coaching girls volleyball for over 30 years and with their first-round matchup at Rickard Montgomery looming, he feels confident that the girls will do great.

“I feel very good about what we can do in the playoffs. I told the team that if we play together and don’t beat ourselves that we could win the state volleyball championship this year,” Smallwood said.
