Cheerleaders from all across Montgomery County gathered at Blair High School for the MCPS Divisional Championships Saturday, Oct. 26. The Clarksburg Varsity cheerleaders’ performance earned them a 2nd-place finish and the competition’s spirit award.

Tireless hours of practice paid off as the entire team excelled during their performance landing all jumps, tumbles, and stunts without receiving any deductions. The excitement of a large number of CHS fans also fueled the momentum to help bring out the team’s best.

“I was really confident this year,” senior flyer Samantha Ward said. “We’ve been practicing since the beginning of the year. After the performance, I felt like I was on cloud 9.”

With their strong performance, the Lady Coyotes qualified in the upcoming State Semifinal competition. Clarksburg has now advanced to the state semis in back-to-back years, but this is the first for a new coaching staff led by varsity coach Jasmine Jade.

“Coaching at Clarksburg this year has been a lot of fun. The camaraderie between all the teams here is really good, and the support we get here from the Athletic Department is really awesome,” assistant coach Adrienne Crutch said.

This near win has given the team the motivation and drive to bring back a championship to CHS. It would be a great accomplishment for the team and especially for those varsity seniors graduating this year.

“At the end of the day, I think we should’ve won because we went out there and did our best. I know we have what it takes to come out on top,” junior Joh Ná Clements said.

The girls are now facing the second leg of the competition. This week has been all about perfecting their routine and having more passion than ever to the upcoming State Semifinal Competition Saturday, Nov. 3.

“Making sure everyone understands their roles was something we really stressed here, and that everyone works together because we are one team on the mat,” Crutch said.
